Start fresh
Starting fresh is easier than starting over.
Starting fresh isn’t the same as starting over.
I edited my resumé using a design template a friend created. Anytime I had an update, I simply opened the file, made edits, then saved out a new PDF. Easy. Done.
But then I wanted to tell a more cohesive, detailed story about my career trajectory. And the template, no matter how long it had been around, didn’t accomplish that.
So I deleted the template, and started fresh. Staring at a blank screen asking myself “What did I do?!” I beat myself up about it for a few minutes, but I knew instinctively that in order to get the result I wanted, I needed to start fresh.
You can try to make things work as is. You can work within the bounds, and refine and reuse what is already there. You’ll get far, for a long while. But then your gut tells you something you know: This isn’t working. It’s time to start fresh.
Don’t confuse starting fresh with starting over.
Starting fresh is giving yourself permission to see beyond what’s in front of you.

The best-smelling incense around.
The most resonant memoir I read this year.
